My name is Jesús Feliciano Catalán Garrido, though my family and friends have always known me as Yusy. That name gave rise to Yusy Pipe Art, the brand under which I bring each of my pipes to life.

I live with my wife, Sara Elba, and our horses in a mountain cabin in Vega de Pas, in the heart of the Pasiegos Valleys in Cantabria, Spain. Surrounded by forests, mist, rivers, and mountains, I find the inspiration each day that gives my work its character.

My fascination with pipes began when I was barely twelve years old. It was not a pipe itself that sparked my interest, but the unmistakable aroma of tobacco lingering in the air whenever a passerby walked by smoking. That scent would hang on the path for a few moments, awakening a curiosity in me that never faded.

In the 1990s, I began my journey as an artisan, crafting costume jewelry from alpaca silver and leather, as well as ethnic-style pipes. Years later, in 2025, I rediscovered the world of tobacco pipes and realized I had found the craft to which I truly wanted to dedicate myself.

I studied Graphic Design with a specialization in Photography at the Cristóbal Rojas School of Visual Arts in Venezuela. Although my artistic training has profoundly influenced my understanding of form, volume, and aesthetics, my journey into pipe making has been entirely self-taught. Each piece represents hours of study, observation, experimentation, and continuous learning.

Among the artisans who have most inspired my work, Erik Nørding, Neerup, and Crown stand out. I particularly admire the creative freedom of Danish design, where each pipe is born out of respect for the personality of the briar block rather than a rigid pattern.

For me, crafting a pipe is much more than just working with wood. It is about finding the balance between functionality, beauty, and character. Each block of briar possesses a unique personality, and my job is to discover the shape that already exists within it, removing only the excess material.

I work exclusively with carefully selected Italian and Spanish briar. All my stems are crafted from high-quality acrylic and adorned with acrylic rings that add a touch of elegance without detracting from the pipe itself.

Each piece is crafted entirely by hand. I do not use a lathe or mechanized processes to shape the briar. From the initial layout to the final polish, every stage of the process relies solely on my hands, my tools, and my experience. This approach ensures that no two pipes are exactly alike.

My designs range from classic shapes to freehand interpretations, always striving for harmonious proportions, excellent ergonomics, and—above all—an exceptional smoking experience. I believe a good pipe should feel natural in the hand, be well-balanced, and offer precise airflow that allows one to fully enjoy the tobacco.

The finishes can be natural, stained, or rustic, always aiming to respect the beauty of the briar’s grain. I prefer each finish to enhance the wood’s personality rather than conceal it.

Outside the workshop, I find inspiration in the nature around me, as well as in music, architecture, and art. I also enjoy instinctive archery, horseback riding, chess, and mountain biking. All these activities teach me patience, focus, and respect for the process—values ​​I strive to reflect in every one of my pipes.

My greatest wish is for every Yusy Pipe Art pipe to accompany its owner for many years—not merely as an object for smoking, but as a piece with a soul, created to be part of moments of calm, reflection, and enjoyment.
