Description
Antique Marzi & Remy 1406 German Stoneware Tobacco Jar – 1 Litre. Exceptional German tobacciana featuring relief decoration with gnomes, beer and smoking pipes.
Discover a remarkable piece of European tobacciana: an antique Marzi & Remy German stoneware tobacco jar, originating from the historic Westerwald pottery region of Germany. This striking piece is distinguished by its richly detailed relief decoration, deep green and cream colour scheme, and scenes featuring Heinzelmännchen — the traditional gnome-like figures of German folklore — depicted in scenes associated with beer, tobacco and pipe smoking. A highly characterful object for collectors of pipes, tobacco memorabilia, German ceramics, Westerwald stoneware, antique tobacciana and European vintage pieces.
Marzi & Remy – A Historic Westerwald Manufacturer: Marzi & Remy was one of the most renowned historic manufacturers of German stoneware in Höhr, in the Westerwald region of Germany. The company was founded in 1879 by Anton Marzi and Simon Peter Remy and developed an important production of stoneware and decorative ceramics, including beer steins, vessels, tobacco jars and pieces featuring elaborate relief decoration.Marzi & Remy’s work is particularly appreciated for its use of high-quality stoneware, moulded relief decoration, glazes and traditional German folk motifs. This piece beautifully reflects the distinctive character of Westerwald German stoneware, combining practical function with highly decorative craftsmanship.
A Tobacco Jar with History and Character: the piece features a cylindrical body measuring approximately 21 cm in height and 11 cm in diameter. It is accompanied by its matching ceramic lid, finished with a decorative finial. Several markings and numbers can be seen on the base, including 1406, 4 and 1 L. The number 1406 corresponds to mould numbering associated with Marzi & Remy’s production, while the 1 L marking indicates the capacity of the vessel. The presence of a mould number and capacity marking makes this piece particularly interesting to collectors, as these details provide valuable information about the manufacturing system used by historic German ceramic manufacturers.
Elaborate Relief Decoration: one of the most remarkable features of this tobacco jar is its three-dimensional relief decoration. The rich green background provides a striking contrast to the raised cream-coloured figures and ornaments. The scenes feature gnomes or Heinzelmännchen, traditional figures from German folklore, surrounded by elements associated with everyday life, beer and tobacco. The figures appear among barrels, drinking vessels and smoking pipes, creating a wonderfully appropriate theme for a historic tobacco container. The result is a piece combining German stoneware, folk art, Westerwald ceramic tradition, German folklore, beer culture, tobacco history, pipe-smoking culture and decorative relief ceramics. This design is attributed to Carl Moos, a designer who worked for Marzi & Remy.
A Special Piece for Pipe & Tobacco Collectors: this tobacco jar is particularly appealing to collectors who see pipe smoking as more than simply a pastime — but as part of a long-standing cultural and artisanal tradition. Historic tobacco jars were not merely practical storage vessels. Many were also designed as decorative objects and could become an important part of a smoker’s personal environment. This Marzi & Remy piece beautifully combines both functions of a historic tobacco container and a collectible decorative object. It would make an excellent addition to pipe, tobacco and tobacciana collections, as well as German ceramic and Westerwald stoneware displays. It is equally suited for traditional smoking rooms, pipe clubs, libraries, studies and classic or vintage interiors.
